My kids have been talking about what they want for Christmas for months now. The other day I was asked for some paper so they could write these things down so no one would forget. I love how they seem to think that the simple act of writing these wished-for items down on paper will make them materialize in our house for them on Christmas morning. A standard 8-1/2 x 11 sheet of paper was insufficient. They wanted BIG paper. Two-foot by three-foot big.
While they were writing, I started reflecting on my own wishes. Here's the list I came up with:
While they were writing, I started reflecting on my own wishes. Here's the list I came up with:
1. Comfort and Joy for my son...
Big G just got braces on, and he is miserable.
Not so much in this picture because this is before.
The misery level was like a race horse charging out of the gate from the moment the bell sounded...
in this case, from the moment they cranked his lips open with the scary mouth thing :(
First, they painted his teeth blue...
and after they painted them blue, they washed it all off.
Then they started putting the brackets on...
This was the part that took the longest, I guess because they need to position them just so.
Once the brackets were in place, they added the wire...
which is held on my these super cool, teeny tiny rubber bands...you can pick the color.
Big G chose a sedate and unobtrusive grey.
His eyes are not smiling.
Now his whole face is not smiling :(
The whole procedure took about 2.5 hours. And the situation went rapidly downhill. He doesn't care about how they look...for him, it is all about the comfort and the food. He has spent the last 48 hours crying and wimpering and just being super super sad that he is not able to eat any of his favorite foods...except ice cream...but he can't very well eat that for every meal...I mean, it would melt in his lunchbox.
So that is my first Christmas wish... for my son to be comfortable and happy.
2. O, Christmas Tree...
A real one this year...
not like last year.
I want one like we had in 2006...
but that was a different house and a lifetime ago.
3. All is calm... all is bright...
I want to feel solid and secure. I want to always be able to remember that sunshine (or starlight) is just around the corner...even when things don't seem that way. I know that exercise helps immensely with this...as does a healthful nutrition plan. And let's not forget therapy. I keep plugging away at this. I want to be an optimist...
4. Some figgy pudding...
I get so tired of not being able to eat gluten. I wish for the ability to safely eat regular food!
okay...enough Christmas carol openers...
5. A solid right hip that never hurts...okay... let's broaden that... a body that doesn't hurt. This would include no more migraines. Yes, migraines...that would be you. You are not welcome around here. Go away.
6. A house that works for our family. This house is like one big room. You can hear everything and anything, everywhere and anywhere. There is no separation of space. I liked this at first, but now it just doesn't work...for any of us.
7. A procrastination antidote and punctuality serum. Do I really need to explain this, other than to say I am one of those people everyone seems to hate in that I am always running about 5 minutes late? Always. Even if I leave my house more than an hour before I am told I need to, I will invariably get stuck behind a 20-minute train and a jack-knifed tractor-trailer rig on the interstate that slows traffic down to a crawl...rendering me 5 minutes late! It isn't that I don't care, so don't give me that line about how it is such a sign of disrespect and selfishness.
8. Perfect, uncorrected vision, both close and far. I want to not need glasses or contacts to see. I want to wake up in the morning and see the world clearly from the moment I open my eyes. I want to see my child's splinter easily so that I can remove it quickly. I want to enjoy my children's artwork when they jam it up into my face instead of freaking out at what I cannot see so darn close!
9. This...
I want the one that comes with the 5,000-sq.ft. house on an acre of land...in my area.
And that house that comes with the dog would also come with a staff to take care of said house and grounds and help out with the dog when I required assistance.
10. And this...
Luckily, they added 2 rear seats to this model, so the dog can ride around with me :)
This is by no means a finite list!
What's on your wish list?
And I decided to link this list up with Stasha, my favorite NorthWest Mommy :) for this week's...
and yes, I know it's Thursday... see #7.
Merely calm perseverance. Since a time-machine to go back to change things would result in me being somewhere else now, calm perseverance.
ReplyDeleteThat and an endless supply of free race vouchers...that include airfare and lodging. Food I can cover my ownself since I'd be buying that anyway.
Oh, and the letter M stricken from the English language.
ahhhh the braces...I did not need to have those. Bill did and it looks like both our kids will also. I am so not looking forward to that day.
ReplyDeleteI wish for health. that is it.
for my kids, for Bill, for ME for everyone.
#4 would be nice too ...for the Holiday season at least!!!
ReplyDeleteMan, it hurts to look at someone getting braces on. I remember how painful it was getting those when I was 12 - main part that hurt the most was getting the rubber bands loosened and re-tightened every month or so. Just puts so much pressure on the teeth. G will probably love this part, haha And it sucks not being able to floss easily, not sure if my gums will ever be the same with not being able to floss as much from when I had braces.
ReplyDeleteAnd I enjoy pressing the easy button daily!
Braces....same nightmare for A. cry and pain...soooo much pain... I was feeling guilty to have her under medication for so long time, a week, but was the only way !
ReplyDeleteAnd one day, a week after, no more complaining, next appointment is soon, and I'm ready with medication again, I hope I won't have to open those boxes.
I also want that big house with space, and yard, and no neighbors looking in my house !
Ah yes braces...I'll be contributing to my dentist's new summer home in the future as it looks like barring a miracle both of my boys will need them.
ReplyDeleteI'm with you on #5 - and by extension, health for my family. I also wish for more joy, inner peace and for my annoying neighbors to move.
Oh, the braces! Poor guy! My stepson had a separator installed in the roof of his mouth, called a T Rex. Ack, so painful. My husband had to crank it every night to separate his jaw. And now, in a year or so, he gets the actual braces on. Poor kids.
ReplyDeleteThis is really a cute post...I may need to steal it :).
ReplyDeleteThe braces pain will subside soon...at least until he goes and gets them tightened every couple months. I always felt so miserable for them that I let them eat whatever...mashed potatoes, jello, pudding and milk shakes. Whatever, as long as it was calories.
I'd love to go back to 2006, too. Oh how different my life was, so less stressful. Let's take a jet plane back together! Or at least a girls' trip to Mexico for a margarita and some beach action :).
May 2012 bring you much, MUCH happiness (I'm getting my new year's wishes out early...never know if I'll jump off that cliff before then :)).
xoxo
Oh braces! I feel his pain. Hope he's feeling better soon!
ReplyDeleteI love your list! My sister is an orthodontist so I know braces are in my kids future too. She keeps pestering me to get them on my bottom teeth and I keep telling her she's on crack!
ReplyDeleteDo you have celiacs? My mom has that. :(
And #10... what a clunker! ;)
I wouldn't mind if all of humanity could stabilize just a little bit, either. Kind of getting tired of meeting people who work their ass off and are in worse shape than they were 5 years ago - that's not how shit is supposed to work and it's getting old.
ReplyDeleteOh yeah, and a new train set would be nice too. And I also want a pony and cotton candy lollipops for me and all my friends.
Get outta here...that red car is on my list TOO!
ReplyDeleteUgh, I remember getting braces put on for the first time - they hurt! I hated having the inside of my mouth all ripped up! Hope its all back to normal soon...minus corn on the cob and apples off the core!
ReplyDeleteOh poor handsome, Big G. That process looks so,...so...I don't know. I hate to think of him in pain though. Braces are in Thing 1's future. So far just an expanded though.
ReplyDeleteWhen you get #7 I'd be so grateful if you'd share some of that procrastination serum with me.
awwww poor guy. totally understand about the braces. :/ i think this Christmas i am just hoping to enjoy the time with my family. i want each person to be stress free and not worry about the past or future. i hope that we can each just enjoy each other in the moment! thanks for this post! and being so open to share your own list!
ReplyDeleteAll I want for Christmas is a baby who naps!!!
ReplyDeleteI so wish for your's and Big G's pain to go away. And everything else too. Specially the spider with a fluffy big dog and someone to brush him!
ReplyDeleteI'll take one of each please...
ReplyDeleteYour poor son..I have a serious fear of the dentist so I couldn't handle that at all.
ReplyDeleteI wish for my family/friends to stay as healthy and happy as they can be.
..and for me to learn to calm down on my daily commute which is getting more and more brutal daily.
Sounds like a good list. Hope Santa delivers! Those braces pictures bring me back ugh! He will feel better soon and be eating like a king in no time!
ReplyDeleteThis is a great post. Procrastination antidote...I need that. And some serious peace on earth. My oldest son to get a job and start focusing on what really matters...and learn the lesson that his current situation should be teaching him.
ReplyDeleteAnd yeah, free race vouchers, new gear, and a cyclocross bike. :)
I want sleep and rest and pizza
ReplyDeleteI love your list. Life changes and so do we and our needs and wants change along with them. I hope you get a few of these things on your list. Some of them you might have to be patient to receive but who knows what the future holds for you. I think you are definitely deserving of all of them but life just doesn't happen that way. It sure would be great if it did though!!! I think I should make a list too. Hmmm, what would I have on my list? You've given me something to think about.
ReplyDeleteyou have a great list there and EW please NEVER show my mouth needles again...I almost fainted. no joke :P lol
ReplyDeleteI love the braces. I never had to have them but instead I have four front veneers on my teeth giving the illusion my teeth are straight. I chip my front tooth and have never gotten it fixed.
Such a thoughtful list. Yes, you need a leonberger! Your 2006 tree was gorgeous! Wishing you a happy, healthy holiday season my friend!
ReplyDeleteLovely list. I hope Santa can bring you at least most of them. ((HUGS)) My list is extensive and heavily tri related this year. It could happen.
ReplyDeletePoor boy :-( Both my kids will need braces (don't ALL kids get braces now?) and I don't look forward to that initial period where they feel sore and uncomfortable.
ReplyDeleteI wouldn't mind the big dog and the property to go with him. Wouldn't mind at all :-)
awe - I remember getting braces!! It happened long, long ago but it was very memorable! Tell him that it they get easier to deal with pretty quickly.
ReplyDeleteFor your vision - Have you thought about LASIK or similar surgeries? I'm new to your blog, so I don't know if you've mentioned this one before. My siblings and I all had surgeries to correct our vision - I highly recommend it!
This post terrifies me since im going to the orthodontis Monday. I did the braces thing a long time ago and im not lookinv forward to it again. You should get a Leonberger. My sister has 2 and my parents have 2. They are all the most loving, well behaved dogs. And...you would look good in the car with one!
