If you're running CIM this weekend...

You're probably going to get wet.

And it's most likely going to be miserable.

And you will be cursing the day you signed up for what was supposed to be an 'easy' marathon.

If you're running CIM this weekend...

Remember:  running is an OUTDOOR sport. Click that...yeah. Click it. And read it. It'll be good for you.

I'll bet you hate me now.

But... I will be there shouting and shrieking my little heart out in the hopes that it will spur you (yes, YOU) on to an amazing and transcendent experience. I will be like a screaming ray of sunshine in the midst of the storm...and hopefully not one that beams right into your eyeballs in a really annoying way. And I will be really glad I am not running. Just being honest.

Here's the cheer gear so you'll know it's ME cheering for YOU...and we won't be random people passing each other in the rain...

Miss C modeling the chartreuse t-shirt with bright pink lettering:
"XL says..."

"GO"

I'm prepared for the rain, too...

Bad, dark photo...but I think you can see enough.

I know I look naked under the Hefty bag...but I'm not. And I won't be on Sunday either...so don't get your hopes up.

But seriously, does it look too much like The Grim Reaper? The last thing I want to look like on the sidelines of a marathon is Death!

Please know that I have run CIM in the pouring rain myself. 1997. A million years ago. I was freaking out leading up to the moment the gun went off...and then it was really fun. I'm not kidding. And I even did okay.

I'm rooting for all this weekend's runners who will be facing inclement weather...I wish each and every one of you a hearty bonne chance! That's fancy for "good luck." And understand that despite my little rant about running being an outdoor sport, my hat is off to all of you for braving the elements :)

GO, RUNNERS!!!!!

*If you'd like some personal attention during Sunday's running of CIM, let me know in a comment. Tell me your # and give a ballpark range for estimated average pace and I'll see what I can do. Just remember that I am notorious for not seeing the people I'm intending to see...hence my really LOUD outfit...that way if I don't see you, at least you'll see me :) *

  1. I like running in the rain...hopefully these CIM runners won't have to do it for 26.2 mles, though! And you rock for being there in the rain to cheer. :)

  2. I LOVE THAT SHIRT.

I am excited, rain or not. I am hoping the wind is a tailwind, though.

    Hope to see you!!!!

  4. I like running in the rain, in fact I was slightly disappointed that when I was in London a few weeks ago it was basically dry every time I ran. feel like I got ripped off on the weather. Now, someone who is watching runners while it's raining - that's miserable. Or at least it is when watching bike races, but I assume it's the same. You are soaked and basically just standing there either way. So in a weird way, this post is for you.

  8. Well *I* am totally pumped! Something I have learned over the years is that, barring very very extreme circumstances (ie, more extreme than running a rainy, windy marathon) *I'm* the one in control of how miserable I am. So I can choose to be miserable, or I can choose to get excited about seeing how fast I can run a marathon in miserable conditions and the fact that I might come out of it with a cool story to tell.

I hope I see you!! I am terrible at spotting people, so I appreciate the loudness of your outfit. I would tell you what I'll be wearing but at this point I don't even know. :)

  10. Totally thought you were naked under there. Totally. Thanks for clarifying. :) Have fun! I will be cheering everyone on virtually...maybe you can channel my cheers and yell really loud for our friends!!

  11. I don't mind running in the rain, though what they are predicting on Sunday sounds a lot less fun than running in a light rain. I'm not running CIM though, so I just get to watch on Twitter.

  12. Your little model is too cool. You are a major trooper -- standing out in that weather almost seems worse than running in it! I don't think anyone is worried about rain. I, for one, am only worried about the 28 mph winds with 50 mph gusts that are predicted, because having run in that exact conditions in Washington DC while Sandy was brewing, I know that it is miserable...the rain with that kind of wind hurts like pellets... I can do it for one hour, but not two, or three, or four...

Plus I didn't pay $150 for a marathon to have fun in a predicted flood zone, or to battle freak weather obstacles that happen in Sacramento once every three+ years. I'd sign up for a tough mudder if that was the goal.

    1. Isn't the goal to see what to what limit you can push your body and your mind on a specified day over a specified distance...come hell or high water? If the goal is strictly a number, then a treadmill or indoor marathon would perhaps provide a more controlled environment. All that said, I see no shame in a DNS in such shitty conditions and would have no problem eating a big entry fee myself especially if I were already battling injury. It's only money.

As for wind...the athlete population with probably the greatest level of wind hatred would be rowers. Believe me when I say I completely understand what you're saying and have true compassion for what you're feeling.

You are a true competitor. I know you will bring the best game you've got come Sunday and I can't wait to see you in action :)

  16. You are awesome both for this post and for showing up on Sunday! I already sent you my info and will be on the look out for the garbage bag lady -- I'll be the last one in from blog land -- so don't leave until you see me!!!

  17. I think it will be tougher for you than for us. Brrr!! Hopefully you're adding pants to that outfit. :) I'm hoping for an 8:00 pace and will likely be tucked behind somebody really tall ;) Scream real loud if you notice me go by!!

I think my running resume (this year especially) speaks for itself on how much I dig the crazy weather: frickin' hot marathon, ultramarathon in Alaska in February. This is gonna be fun!! Bring it on Mother Nature.
