I'll be wearing my yoga pants.

Sweatpants have long been considered the pinnacle of comfort. Invented in the 1920's, they were the sportswear of choice for over 60 years.

They segued into doubling as loungewear in the 1980's with the explosion of a video/screen-oriented lifestyle. "They offered the non-judgmental comfort of flannel pajamas while creating the illusion that aerobic activity was on the horizon.

As time went on, the Fashion Police deemed sweatpants slovenly...inappropriate and disgusting for normal everyday wear. The Fashionable Moms criticized 'sloppy' moms for wearing their comfy sweats to school drop-offs and pick-ups and the grocery store. "Pull yourself together," they cried. "Have a little self-respect!"

This mentality crossed the gender lines. Some of you may remember this exchange from Seinfeld:

And so yoga pants stepped in. A little more flattering (usually) and trendy (then), yoga pants were embraced by the sweatpants moms who were interested in looking a little sharper. And for awhile, the Fashionable Moms stayed off our case.

Now yoga pants aren't good enough. Slammed as being 'lazy' and 'sloppy' and 'too revealing', yoga pants are now the target of the Fashion Police.

I'll agree that while this look is pretty hawt,
it might be a little risqué for school pick-ups and drop-offs...
not that I look like that in my white yoga pants and matching tube top
when I pull up at my kids' school...

"Throw on a pair of skinny jeans," they counsel. "...a great fitting pair of jeans is just as comfortable as a pair of yoga pants..." I don't know about you, but I've never found this to be a universal truth. Furthermore, "a great fitting pair of jeans" is really, really hard to find and often can break the budget. A decent pair of yoga pants, however, is most forgiving concerning figure imperfections and easy on the wallet. I just bought a pair at Target today for $19.99.

just try to convince me that this is more comfortable than yoga pants.

And even if the jeans were a 'better fit'...

...is this more 'appropriate' than the white outfit above? It is jeans, after all.

Jeans make my hip hurt.

I'll be wearing my yoga pants.  At least until I look like the halter top chick in jeans.

  1. I heart yoga pants. And I admire fashionable moms who have style AND enough to their lives that they don't spend them judging what I'm wearing.

  3. Why don't you start wearing break-away pants, like the basketball players do? No one's doing that. Maybe Golden State is doing a women's specific pair with "Warriors" arched across the buttocks.

  4. love this :) love my yoga pants!! and while i do have several pairs of jeans that are comfortable and that I love, I think anyone who says jeans are as comfortable as yoga pants is DELUSIONAL!

  5. That girl in the white looks HOT. I like yoga pants. They are just tight enough but not too tight. And comfy!

  6. I loved this post. I think people can wear whatever they want - I love "jeggings" - jean style leggings with pockets on the bum so they're "ok" ;) hahaha if someone told me to stop wearing whatever clothing article I chose I'd ask them why they cared about what I was wearing??

.....betcha they'd take a while coming up with an answer. and any answer would be laughable. ;)

  7. I love my yoga pants! Love them! But I almost never wear them out, the second I get home they are on though! I do have some very comfy jeans, but with the buttons and lack of stretch, they can never match the yoga pants in the comfort realm, and my hubs thinks yoga pants are sexy!

  8. I'm sure you look hawt in your yoga pants. I don't even own yoga pants LOL, so I tend to drop my kids off in running tights. That's acceptable, right? ;o)

  9. LMAO!!! One of my favorite posts yet!!!! I am following you!!

What is NOT TO LOVE about yoga pants???They stretch with ya, keep you cool, warm you up, hold you in...and keep their shape! Hell, they may be better than men:):):)
just joking for those who don't know me well...

I'll wear them tomorrow just for you!!

  10. I had these sweatpants on the other night when my daughter called and asked if I wanted to meet her for dinner. So I hoped in the car and met her. Her first comment, "You have got to be kidding!! Couldn't you have at least worn some stretchy gym pants (aka: yoga pants) over those hideous sweatpants?" Well, in my defense, the sweatpants were given from a duathlon (in place of yet another race shirt. Genius!!) so I was just bragging about my achievements! :)

  14. I was just thinking the other day that I would be perfectly happy to wear yoga pants and a tee or hoodie everyday.

Those jeans? No way can they be as comfortable as yoga pants.

  16. You totally skipped the Jane Lynch matching track suit style which was solidly in between slovenly sweat pants and super chic yoga pants. Actually, while I love yoga pants, I think I look best in the yoga capris. Can't wait for warm weather!!

  19. Patrick brings up something interesting with the break-away pants. I loved my breakaway pants when I made varsity basketball in high school - I was totally willing to sit the bench just to have break-away pants.

Just to clear the air Girl #1 is the most attractive (sweats and all). Of course, that would be to me...

  21. I had to comment because I couldn't stop laughing! My 70 yr old mom just told me she ordered my 91 yr old grandma some pajama jeans because she needs jeans with an elastic waist. I said she'd never wear them. My mom said she loves hers. She wears them around the house and to run to the store. Again she'll never wear them because I'd never wear them. Mom said I dress like a grandma! Do you see the humor here?! I do yoga pants!

  22. I remember that episode between Jerry and George! I have a pair of lounge pants i just bought at Gilly Hicks - and i have to say, when i wear them around the house, i feel a little sexier! Coming by from the blog hop!

  23. I started running in jeans. I ran in them for over three years. Finally my hubby couldn't stand it and made me go buy some yoga pants. (not kidding) I finally morphed into actual running gear. Athletic gear scared me for years. I probably need counseling. :)

  25. Who knew that yoga pants were invented in the 20s? Certainly not me! (-:
And it is so true - skinny jeans are nowhere near as comfy as yoga pants because of the blub around the middle that pooches out. With yoga pants, the elastic just sort of....hugs the blub, instead of making it an actual feature. (-:
    Loved this post.

  26. Came to this via Ado's controversial post regarding her mommy wardrobe. ;) Glad I saw it, truly a great post. I'm sticking to my ankle length black knit skirt. Hides every thing that even yoga pants can't hide and I'm comfortable. Does, though, keep me from breaking out into spontaneous exercise. Hmmm... Maybe I'd be more active with a wardrobe change. ;) Hope you are well and think of you often.

I bought some video course from amazon and some cool yoga leggings, which I also use when I am at home. I did not find the yoga course online to show it to you but I remembered the website from where I got my leggings ( https://ladiesss.com/products/unique-yoga-leggings ) - I am really satisfied with the quality and comfort.
