Stream of Consciousness and the DAR...

I'm finding myself mired in the debilitating doldrums of despair...ignited by the insidious inhibitions of inertia. It is neither a good place nor a good look for anyone.
Just imagine a toddler jumping on that person and the sounds of "Jay Joe Jeans and his jelly beans, hey! Let's sing a song about JAYYYY!" playing in the background and you have created my life.

I plan to bust a move as soon as I finish cleaning the bathrooms, washing my hair, balancing my checkbook, folding and putting away the laundry, going through the toy piles in the living room... HA! Who am I kidding? None of that is going to happen. So I need to just bust a move. Slap myself out of this funk... NOW. Inertia, be GONE!

Whew.

So I had a gadget for you, but it broke. I think I can fix it, but in the meantime I'm showing you another old family photo...are you sick of those yet?

This lovely young woman was married to the guy who ran the tight ship. They had six children...part of my big family legacy. She is one of my great-grandmothers...the mother of my paternal grandfather. She hails from distinguished lineage...founders of towns, an American Revolutionary War hero, judges, some lords in the middle ages (for real)... so yeah...I come from good stock :)

I'm thinking of applying for DAR membership, but something in the back of my mind is saying something bad about the DAR but I can't quite make out the message. And it is kind of incongruous...a Berkeley-raised, free-thinking person who loves traveling abroad deciding to join a staunchly patriotic group of historical zealots (or maybe that's a bit extreme)... but I suppose it is these contradictions that make me who I am :)

Boy, I really need to start working out again. My mind is gone...

Anyone know anything about the DAR?  How about the Mayflower Society?

  2. I am an archivist, in Virginia of all places, so I know ALL about DAR, Mayflower, Colonial Dames, UDC, and any number other societies. I would say you probably would not enjoy the social aspect of that kind of club. Maybe it's different in sunny CA, but on the east coast it is a little...dour. I would suggest you do the research and genealogy that would be required for entrance, but maybe not really join. A lot of people really love the genealogy and really get interested in that, and are kind of disappointed when they join and find that it's tea parties and gossip and bragging about the generals in your line.

  5. Join DAR and create a relay team for a Ragnar event in New England. Do you see the genius in this?

  6. The only thing I know about DAR is that I quality. Let me know if it is worth investigating.

  7. I have a DAR membership, but I know nothing about it. My paternal grandma was a member and signed me up. I'd say just do it.

  8. Okay, love your stream of consciouness here. Plese teach me how to have the reply option on my blog too!!! I'm desperately wanting to know. I guess you could say that I'm from good stock too...ha ha. My grandparents on my dad's side of the family were huge into our family line so I have a lot of info on my connections to Robert E. Lee, Queen Elizabeth, George Washington, etc. My grandmother took so much pride in being part of the DAR but I had never considered it myself.

  9. I don't know about other of those, but I think my grandmother was part of DAR. I'd ask her about it, but she's been gone a long time. Haha.

Hoping you have a great sunny day outside tomorrow and you're able to get out and enjoy it! :)

  10. Actually, once you trace your family tree far enough back, there just aren't that many limbs on it. Apparently I qualify for the DAR as well... and the Mayflower Society. Or so my grandma maintained. And I'm a direct descendant of Charlemagne... but so are all of us, according to this article.

  12. Hope you can get out of your "despair" before too long.

It's kinda nice to know I'm not the only one with psoas problems.

  13. I think the idea of DAR sounds good, but wonder if it's the OTHER people who'd be there that might muck it up a bit (like our districts PTA at school--would love to help, but not be anywhere near those women...because of course I m not like them...at all)
