Granny's Gadgets – Quarterly Review and Giveaway!

Don't be alarmed!

I am not out of gadgets! There are still many more to come :)

This little change-up is to give us all a bit of a breather, have a chance to see what we've learned, digest the information and talk about which are winners and which are ... not. I know you can go to my tabbed page "Granny's Gadgets" and check out what we've seen so far, but how many people do that? So I am putting it all together into this one post, so we can easily compare.

And there is a lil' giveaway attached to this whole shebang!

The Meat Pounder started the gadget game... it was a mystery. And in its post, how I came to be in possession of Granny's Gadgets is explained. Mandatory reading for any GG lover :)

Over the past 12 weeks, we've seen 4 gadgets that are egg-related.  There was the super cool egg topper, the nostalgic egg slicer, the bizarre contraceptive-device-esque egg peeler, and the nearly-unanimously-agreed-as-unnecessary egg separator.

There were three items that relate directly to baking... the very handy pie-slice-lifter-outter thing, the well-loved and oft-used apple corer, and the super birthday gadget... the cake tester!

We pondered seemingly-broken utensils... our grapefruit tools :P

And rounded things out with our Valentine's Day-appropriate spurtle (who doesn't love saying that?) and attempted to take fancy presentation to famous-restaurant-standards with the butter stamp mold thingamajig.

This brings us to the giveaway part...

To help you start (or continue) your own gadget collection, you can win a...
$20 gift card

There are several ways to win this amazing jumpstart toward your own heirloom Granny's Gadgets set. Here's how you can enter:

  1. Mandatory!(only this first one is mandatory)  write a comment telling which was your favorite gadget video to date and why (gets you 1 entry), then you can also...
  2. leave a comment about which gadget you wish you had (1 more entry) OR
  3. post a comment detailing which gadget you felt was a dud and why (2 entries!) OR
  4. go to the Taking It On Facebook page and click "like" (another 2 entries) OR
  5. link this giveaway on your blog or Facebook (worth 2 entries) OR
  6. tell me what kind of gadget do you hope to see in the future! (1 more entry)

You get a brownie point for being a public, official follower of Taking It On... but you needn't follow if you don't like to read my stuff :P And do let me know in the comment that you are a follower. If you add it all up, that's TEN possible ways to win! WOW! I know!

You don't need a google account to leave a comment... anyone can leave a comment :)
And you don't need to leave a separate comment for each entry if you don't want to, just maybe put the corresponding 'ways to enter' number in front of each entry within a single comment... I can add them all up and sort it all out.

The entries will close Monday April 4, 2011 at 8 a.m. I will announce the winner in that day's Granny's Gadgets post.

Good luck to all who choose to play!  And remember...

you've gotta play to win ;-)

(And don't forget to vote in the photo contest in the sidebar!!!)

Disclaimer:  Williams-Sonoma had nothing to do with this giveaway, other than selling me the gift card ;-)  This giveaway is solely a way of thanking gadget-lovers, followers and "likers" for supporting my blog... and trying to find out if anyone is actually paying attention to this mess :P

  1. ha Love this! Especially since I'm pretty sure I've seen every single on of these. :) My fav was probably the spurtle because it was so funny watching you use it. Unfortantely, it would be too dangerous to have around my house so that's not the one I'd want. :) I'd be hiding it from my kids who would use it as a weapon.

  2. The egg separator for sure! This would make my life so much easier since my oldest daughter asks for only egg whites for breakfast when we have eggs. :)

  3. A dud? Well, I thought the stamper...butter stamper or whatever the hell that was was a big waste. I'd never use it! :)

  4. Amanda's comments crack me up.

  5. new here, so its taking me a bit to get caught up :)

I'm laughing over the name "spurtle". I had NO idea thats what it was called.

  6. totally need the pie slice lifter outter thingy ma bob

  7. I would say the "egg top cutter offer" hehe would be the dud for me. Or any of the "eggish" ones. I hate eggs.

yeah yeah, that doesn't make the utensils a "dud" but they make them useless to me :)

  8. Okay, miss video maker. You should show your gorgeous face. I personally liked the egg/beet/banana slicer. I've always wanted one of those.

    ReplyDelete
  9. I'd go with the egg slicer or the pie thingee.

    ReplyDelete
  10. I already like you. And I like you on FB.

    ReplyDelete
  11. I thought the cake tester was kinda a dud only because you can use almost anything to test a cake: I use bamboo skewers, which I have by the 100s in my kitchen.

    ReplyDelete
  12. I'd like to see a cake server gadget. I need one desperately.

    ReplyDelete
  13. Look forward to following your blog!

  14. 1.My favorite gadget was the egg shell separator although I am certain that I would never use it. For one I would probably turn the water on too high and the water would come back at me and I also don't think that I would bother to dig it out to use it UNLESS I was making deviled eggs which is why it's my favorite. A device that leaves your eggs divet-free? COOL!

    2. The gadget that I would like to have would be the apple corer. It seems so 101 for having kids and yet I don't have one. (I do have a slicer though that slices the whole apple with one punch

    3. Cake tester and Egg White Separator are tied for duds. There are way too many ways to check a cake and that skinny tool would get lost in the gadget drawer. You can easily break an egg into your bare hand to separate it. No need for a device.

    4.Already like you!

5.Will be done in mere seconds.

6.Feature the apple slicer that I mentioned in my second comment!

  15. I simply likesaying Spurtle!! So glad we have connected via bloggyland!!

    Egg separator!

    ReplyDelete
  16. I wish Ihad an egg separator b/c I always get shells in my mixtures!!

    ReplyDelete
  17. Somehow I missed the spurtle issue, that thing is pretty hardcore and your video was great. Lobster, frozen tamales... it's all good.

I, like Amanda, fear that it would be put to ill use in my house though.

  18. I wish I had the pie scooper thing. My husband lives for blackberry pie and the first scoop is always an incredible mess.

    ReplyDelete
  19. I'm not a very big fan of the egg separator, it's not so much a dud, but not very needed either.

    ReplyDelete
  20. Oops, forgot to say why, mostly because eggs are really easy to separate either with the shells or cradled carefully in one's hand, the egg separator is just one more thing that would have to be washed.

I already like you on FB. :)

  21. I'm linking you on my blog. :)

Thanks... keep the granny gadgets coming!

    ReplyDelete
  22. BTW I loved your fine print but I didn't read it carefully enough as I left lots and lots of comments instead of just one. Silly me.

    ReplyDelete
  23. Um, did it get any better than your um, grapefruits? lol

    ReplyDelete
  24. I know... for real! The grapefruits rocked the house :P that was MY favorite video! My favorite gadget to use was the triple spatula... I love how it snaps opened and closed :)

    ReplyDelete
  25. Hmmm...I think the butter thinger was a dud.....'cause did it really work? I don't know. I have one very similar to that ironically. It sits in the back of my drawer. And the kids pull it out every once in a while and ask "what is this thing?" And I tell them it's for buttering corn on the cob and then they hound me about eating corn on the cob but it's usually January when they ask things like this so corn on the cob is hard to find. So I stuff it back into the back of the drawer until next January. 8 more months till they pull it back out again.

  26. I need an apple corer. So I could quit cutting apples for the kids and just let them do it! Why the heck haven't I bought one?
Also, I want a spurtle. Just so I can say I have a spurtle.

    ReplyDelete
  27. You know I already like you. I lurve you! :) That's why I keep leaving separate comments for everything even though I read the fine print and know that I could have left just one comment. Which is why you like me too! :P

  28. the only one I don't have is the spurtle so I want that one!!! just the name is hilarious

    ReplyDelete
  29. dud..the buttler thing..comes from my MIL I never used it...don't even know where it is anymore!

    ReplyDelete
  30. 1. I think my favorite video so far has been the butter stamp mold thingy. I was laughing with you as you were trying to get the butter back out.
    2. I wish I had the cake tester. Really! Drives me nuts when I'm trying to test a deep quick bread - toothpicks just aren't quite long enough.
    6. My mom has many gadgets herself. So I would laugh if you found an egg-squarer. There's also the very useful tuna can drainer. A little more recognizable is the cherry pitter. I'm excited to see what else you find in there!

    ReplyDelete
  31. Butter Stamp Mold is my fave video, I just found you :)

    ReplyDelete
  32. wow, i'm a new follower so i had to get caught up on all these gadgets.
Entry 1) My fav gadget video was the apple corer b/c i think i have one but have never used it b/c i didn't know how! Yup, that's how good I am in the kitchen! Now I can "make" better apple slices for the kiddos w/o any yucky core pieces!

    ReplyDelete
  33. Entry 2) I wish I had...um, the cool spatula thingie. Maybe it had a diff name, i've already forgotten but I'm a pretty bad pancake flipper so I think that would be very handy.

    ReplyDelete
  34. Entries 3 & 4) For a dud, I'm gonna go with the egg slicer - i've just never known any need to slice my eggs! A close second place was the very strange egg separator thing that went on your sink. That was just weird and you still had to peel the shell off! I thought it was gonna do it for you somehow.

Entry 5) I've liked you on facebk!

Entry 6) Hmm..the gadget I hope to see is ... something that might be called a Cupcake Separator (I'm just making this up, by the way). I have a really hard time pouring the batter into a cupcake pan without getting it all over the top of the pan where it will burn. So this gadget should somehow make it wear it won't spill all over the place or maybe it somehow covers up the top of the pan so it can't drip there. Does Granny have anything like that? ;-)

  35. I like spurtle, it makes eating grapefruit easier and funnier.

  41. favorite gadget video: The apple core thingy! We used to have one!

leave a comment about which gadget you wish you had: An egg separator would save me from the slimy egg snot!

gadget you felt was a dud and why: Not a fan of the stamp for butter. Wouldn't the darn thing look like a Salvador Dali as it melted?!?

go to the Taking It On Facebook page and click "like" : I've been a fan for a while now :)

link this giveaway on your blog or Facebook: posted!

gadget do you hope to see in the future: A dishwasher that fits in an RV...and not the human kind!
